I got this item about 2 days ago and am very happy with the product. I had an Friedrich SQ05N10 5400 btu - 115 volt - 11.2 EER Kuhl series room air conditioner and I would never purchase once again. Up until now so great. Can't be worse than the Friedrich SQ05N10 5400 btu - 115 volt - 11.2 EER Kuhl series room air conditioner Also if you registered it on line you got an extra two months warranty.

Cold and Quiet
Was looking for a portable AC but found the EER ratings were not regulated on portable ACs - and thus bogus. Every Tech I spoke with would go with a window unit over a portable when it comes to efficiency.
Did alot of research; I needed a quiet AC, since it was going in a window in a small bedroom. While this unit was alot more costly than other units of the same size, I found it well made.
My only gripes are the cheap screws provided ... which I replaced with stainless. The instructions were so busy telling you what not to do - I found them confusing and almost useless.
The color is more of a vary light grey - much lighter then in the pictures ... and looks great with my white walls.
While a little on the pricey side ... I find the cold air and extremely quiet unit, to be exactly ... what I was looking for.

Bought this A/C because of Consumer Report recommendation.
The unit is ok, easy to run & cools very quickly, But---
Not as quiet as I would have liked. Mounting is terrible, Manuel is poorly written & lacks a lot of information. The unit is designed to mount in a wood frame window but they want you to drive 8 screws into your woodwork. I didn't have to do that since I have a Vinyl window, I did get it installed but I had to use rubber shims between frame & wherever it touched the window to cut down on noise & vibration. The side curtains & bezel are very flimsy. The sleeve was supposed to be 13-5/8 H, & my window opened to 15 in H but the unit barely fit. I would have returned the unit but since shipping was around $35, when I bought it & another $35. to return it & probably a restocking fee I decided to keep it. It's just okay. Not as good as I had hoped. It's okay to buy on line but I recommend on something this big you go somewhere to see it physically & know...

Beware noise issues
I bought this expensive little puppy 3 years ago for my bedroom (NYC apartment). This unit cools and dehumidifies beautifully. It would be nice if the timer function worked. I'd also be happier if it directed air flow upward - when will A/C manufacturers learn that cold air sinks?? Small tip: use a ceiling fan. It's like getting an extra couple of points of energy efficiency.

But these are very minor quibbles compared to the real problem. I've had the installation revised at least 4 times, and spent a lot of time in between trying to figure out why it persistently makes a noise as loud as a freight train whenever the compressor is on. Not to mention the even louder thump when it first comes on. I've put soundproof foam everywhere I could squeeze it, and even wrapped it around the compressor. Because of this, for the past 3 years, A/C season for me has meant needing a white noise machine, and still being awoken at least 2 to 3 times a night. This last go-round,...

I bought this expensive little puppy 3 years ago for my bedroom (NYC apartment). This unit cools and dehumidifies beautifully. It would be nice if the timer function worked. I'd also be happier if it directed air flow upward - when will A/C manufacturers learn that cold air sinks?? Small tip: use a ceiling fan. It's like getting an extra couple of points of energy efficiency.

But these are very minor quibbles compared to the real problem. I've had the installation revised at least 4 times, and spent a lot of time in between trying to figure out why it persistently makes a noise as loud as a freight train whenever the compressor is on. Not to mention the even louder thump when it first comes on. I've put soundproof foam everywhere I could squeeze it, and even wrapped it around the compressor. I have had this unit installed for about 3 weeks now. Overall I am very happy with it. I recieved the unit 4 days sooner than expected and in good packaging and condition. The items were as advertised, with the exception that it actually came with 25' of line, not 15'. Installation was not difficult. Although the instructions were not always clear; a litle common sense and looking at the parts usually worked fine. (The instructions could use a proof-reading by someone who actually speaks english and preferably knows something about A/C, but they were better than many translations now days).

The unit cools my 350 SQ FT bonus room and 500 SQ FT garage way quicker than the A/C in the house cools the house. My only complaint is that the fan will never turn off in the Auto or Cooling modes for some reason. The A/C will kick off but the fan won't. I bought this fan from Wally World for $20 and got totally ripped off. Luckily I can take it back. Yes, you can reverse the fan by pulling it out of the window and flipping it around. - Can you imagine engineering a product to do this rather than installing a reverse switch? The other bogus thing about this product is that it's super weak. Even on full blast, it barely creates a breeze. Total waste of electricity, and time. After reviewing a few other fans, I purchased the very similar, yet superior Honeywell fan which I kid-u-not, blows twice as hard and has a reverse switch on it. The Honeywell fan actually blows cool air in and out as promised. For $5 more, get the superior Honeywell from your favorite French Big-box store with a huge target on the front.

great for the summer, but hard to maintain
pros:
- saves you in energy bills since it can cool the room instead of using the ac
- filters are washable
- the included remote gives you controls even in bed
- the 30 min interval timer feature is great specially when it gets too cold at night

cons:
- the ionizer feature is more of a display light than anything
- needs a weekly maintenance. water mineral builds up at the bottom, if you let it sit for more than a week, taking it out posts a problem.
- if you even find the time to actually clean the insides of the fan and and take out the dusts and water deposits, it would take a lot of patients since the machine wasn't designed for easy disassemble. (you'll need a thin long screw driver to take out some of the screws.)

bottom line:
machine is great as an alternative humidifier and room fan. It is a high maintenance machine make sure you clean it every week or two.

This unit has been perfect for my intended use.

My co-workers prefer to keep our office building a bit warmer than I am comfortable. I have set the Unistar Swamp Cooler in the door of my office, and it effectively keeps my office several degrees cooler than it would otherwise be. I wasn't sure when I bought it whether it would work in a humid region, and have been very happy that it does. Nor does it make the environment uncomfortable humid. I assume that if the primary central A/C went out, this thing wouldn't do much of anything, though, in South Carolina.

Also, the manual is a joy to read. Honestly, I've read it cover to cover at least three times. It is an excellent and humorous example of non-native translation. Example: "Attention: Any parts of the control panel should be forbidden to be stained with water." Well, it amuses me, anyhow. . .

This is a probably an nice grille. The only issues is the case it goes on already comes with a grille. Thats crazy enough but, it gets more interesnting. Not sure what this grille is for unless you just like it better than the other two you will automatically have.
