Well, after doing a lot of research and checking out the testimonials below and in other places, I chose to purchase Friedrich US14D30A 13000 btu - 230 volt - 8.5 EER Uni-Fit series room air conditioner. Though I 'd have liked a better guarantee, I decided the features were attractive enough to attempt it. It is a great deal of cash to get rid of if it fails just after the guarantee. I am completely in love with this product. It is high quality product, clever features. I simply got it today, and I will upgrade my review later on if required.
Definite upgrade
It is really hard to figure out what type of through-the-wall a/c replacement unit to purchase. Specs are not consistent on dealer sites versus company sites versus review sites, the BTU guidelines vary widely, customer service at local retailers will one day match amazon prices and the next day not, and 5-star yelp rated a/c installers that will suggest a brand and then say, "just get the BTU's you want and we'll make it fit."
Then there is the "Do I need a new sleeve?" issue, followed closely by the "Let me measure the sleeve again to make sure." doubts. Compound all that by the fact that I live in a 5th floor walk up, a/c's average 100 pounds, and if it doesn't fit then I will need to deal with returning it (since there is no way to make the hole in the wall larger in a Landmark Preserved building) and, well, that is a lot of stress to stay cool.
However, I needed to do something since the "Emerson Quiet Kool" unit that was in the wall when I bought the place...
